Naysayer Homework

One paragraph I planted a Naysayer in was my paragraph about the 4th misperception. I used Waechter’s article and his ideology that STEM is the only place where you degree would matter out in the real world.

Ungar’s views on the misperceptions of the liberal arts leads me to agree with another one of his views. That misperception is his fourth, where many people believe that one must not only study the arts, they must lean towards STEM because that is where the action is. Ungar’s views on this is that with a liberal arts education, comes a very “broadest possible range of disciplines in the natural sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences”, meaning there is a very wide range of topics including STEM (Ungar). I agree with this idea because I personally believe the liberal arts has all aspects of STEM. As well as they are not the only type of studies when it comes to a liberal arts education. Some naysayers may argue that “STEM graduates, as well as those from accounting programs, learned actual skills.” Waechter says “actual skills” because he believes most liberal arts degrees only teach “soft skills like writing and critical thinking” (Waechter). While this may be true, many jobs today are looking for employees who excel in these areas. Another one of the misperceptions Ungar discusses was his second, which deals with people believing no employer wants to hire someone with a liberal arts degree. Ungar attacks this by stating “an astounding 89 percent said they were looking for more emphasis on “the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing”” (Ungar). Most employers today want their employees to be able to think critically as well as be able to show reasoning skills. The liberal arts includes not only the “soft skills” but STEM as well. Ungar goes onto to state, “the historical basis of a liberal education is in the classical artes liberales, comprising the trivium (grammar, logic, and rhetoric) and the quadrivium (arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music)” (Ungar). Meaning that with a liberal arts education, comes many possibilities to further one’s learning and studies. There are many ways to get the most out of a liberal education, it all depends on what you make of it and what you do with your studies.
