Old Paragraph: A growth mindset is about having the mentality that you can and will get better as long as you keep trying. While a fixed mindset would go against growth because students with a fixed do not want to progress, instead they give up on themselves and think they can not improve their skills. Dweck makes the statement “that abilities can be developed” (Dweck) when speaking about a growth mindset. However, in order to have this mentality you need to fully believe in yourself emotionally. Emotional reasoning is a big factor in having a growth mindset, mainly because students can say to themselves “I feel it, therefore it must be true” (Lukianoff and Haidt). Students and everyday people listen to their emotions, therefore having emotional reasoning can be considered essential to having a growth mindset because growth mindset is about having the mentality that you can improve daily and better yourself.

Emotional reasoning is a big factor in having a growth mindset, mainly because students can say to themselves “I feel it, therefore it must be true” (Lukianoff and Haidt). Lukianoff and Haidt were essentially saying that it is not always good to follow your emotions because they can be negative at certain points. Students and everyday people listen to their emotions, therefore having emotional reasoning can be considered essential to having a growth mindset because growth mindset is about having the mentality that you can improve daily and better yourself.
Old Paragraph: Trigger warnings are what many students have problems with in today’s world. Trigger warnings are defined as warnings that professors give if a sensitive topic is going to be discussed within that class. Trigger warnings have to be taken into consideration when discussing Dweck’s theory of growth mindsets vs fixed mindsets and Lukianoff and Haidt’s theory of critical thinking vs emotional reasoning. I believe students with a growth mindset would not worry about trigger warnings or even be offended by them while certain students would need them in order to participate in class. The same goes for students who use critical thinking, I believe they would pay no mind to the trigger warnings, they would act the same if the trigger warnings were given or not. A student who would want to grow and improve cannot avoid certain topics because it could bring back a certain memory “students with PTSD should of course get treatment, but they should not try to avoid normal life” (Lukianoff and Haidt), students would not be able to grow if they did, they would not be able to progress in life if they avoided reality. Students who use critical thinking would look at this problem the same way as they try and see the different points of view in most things. Trigger warnings can either prevent students from learning or protect students from harsh realities, this depends on the type of mindset you have as a student.
