Homework for September 23rd – Integrating Quotes

Original Version 1: Emotional reasoning is a big factor in having a growth mindset, mainly because students can say to themselves “I feel it, therefore it must be true” (Lukianoff and Haidt). Lukianoff and Haidt were essentially stating that it is not always good to follow your emotions because they can be negative in certain situations.  Students and everyday people listen to their emotions, therefore having emotional reasoning can be considered essential to having a growth mindset because growth mindset is about having the mentality that you can improve daily and better yourself in the long run.

Revised Version 1: Emotional reasoning is a big factor in having a growth mindset, mainly because students can say to themselves “I feel it, therefore it must be true” (Lukianoff and Haidt). Lukianoff and Haidt were essentially stating that is is not always good to follow your emotions because most people will listen to their emotions without looking at the facts and the logical sense of topics. While this may be true, students and everyday people need to listen to their emotions because that is their first instinct, it allows them to fully comprehend their thoughts and ideas. That is what is essential to having a growth mindset because the students need to have the mentality that they can be better and they will be better.

Original Version 2: A student who would want to grow and improve cannot avoid certain topics because it could bring back a certain memory which is why “students [who suffer from] PTSD should of course get treatment, but they should not try to avoid normal life”, students would not be able to grow if they avoided normal life, they would not be able to progress in life if they avoided reality (Lukianoff and Haidt).

Revised Version 2: A student who would want to grow and improve cannot avoid certain topics because it could bring back a certain memory which is why “students [who suffer from] PTSD should of course get treatment, but they should not try to avoid normal life” (Lukianoff and Haidt). When encountering trigger warnings, there are two ways of going about them, those two ways would be having a growth attitude or a fixed attitude. A growth mindset student would look at trigger warnings as another obstacle in their path that they must push through in order to succeed in life, while a fixed mindset student would not want to work on that trigger warning and have it hinder their process in becoming a successful student.

The first quote was an improvement because I made my argument more precise, I am allowing the reader to fully understand my perspective. As well as I am getting my message across to the reader using my own words rather than just letting the quote do the talking.

The second quote, I was able to expand my ideas and bring the quote into my argument even though at first it wasn’t really tying to well into my whole paper. However, now it is because I expanded it and brought up certain topics that will be even further explained in the rest of my paper.
