Roth’s article has a connecting point of view to Dweck’s Ted Talk. That connection is the growth mindset to the safe spaces. The growth mindset students have the feeling that no matter what they do, right or wrong, they can always make progress. They have no problem in being wrong, mainly because “[their] abilities can be developed”. That is exactly what safe spaces do for certain students that use them. They allow students to be able to “participate in argument and inquiry without the threat of harassment or intimidation”. Roth argues that if colleges were to provide students with “safe enough spaces” it does not mean that students need protection. It allows the students to be in a judgment free zone. It provides them with a sense of security in a college campus where other students can be very judgmental. A “safe space” would be perfect for someone who has a growth mindset because those are the students that are unorthodox, they are the ones that take the complicated route in completing tasks. Both Dweck’s Ted Talk and Roth’s article share the same point of view when it comes to putting students in the best possible position to succeed, which is why these readings share a true connection.
