Barclays Formula/ Preliminary Paragraph

In connecting Dweck’s Ted Talk to Lukianoff and Haidt article, one must look at the main ideas of each. The main idea of Dweck’s talk was about the two types of mindsets that students have in today’s world. The two types would be a “fixed mindset” and a “growth mindset”. Dweck argues about the power of yet, which would go along with the growth mindset; in which students have the idea “that abilities can be developed”. These types of students would learn from any error that was made and correct it. However, a student with a fixed mindset would “run from the error.. They don’t engage it.” The fixed mindset students have one way of thinking about problems; which would be critically. This is where the connection to “The Coddling’ is made. The main focus of “The Coddling” is about critical thinking vs distorted ways of thinking. Lukianoff and Haidt favor critical thinking with their “goal [being] to minimize distorted thinking and see the world more accurately”.
