Boyer Task 1

  1. In his chapter, Boyer’s main tension is about students at universities wanting a business major because that will better prepare them for the real world as opposed to a liberal arts major. In his chapter he states “today, business is the most popular field of undergraduate study” (Boyer). However, this should not be the case. All types of majors whether it be a liberal arts or business major are equally important. They will both provide you with ways of obtaining a job after college. Most employers today are in fact looking for employees with a liberal arts degree.
  2. When Boyer mentions “enriched major”, he means that one should look at their field of study and put it into perspective. In doing so, it will help answer three questions “What is the history and tradition of the field to be examined? What are the social and economic implications to be understood? What are the ethical and moral issues to be confronted?” (Boyer). Boyer believes an enriched major is a very positive way of looking at one’s field of study because it will best prepare you for the future.
